Born and raised in Providence, RI, Shawn Andrews, the “kid with the headphones” was not planning on being a student leader early in his career at Rhode Island College.
A graduate of The MET School in Providence, Shawn had a reputation for being blunt, sarcastic and apathetic towards almost everything, an attitude he carried with him as he entered RIC in the fall of 2006.
An artist since childhood, Shawn became a Studio Arts major after entering RIC. Struggling in the program he chose to take another path after his first semester. After meeting with OASIS, Shawn chose to exploit some of his other interests and registered as a communications major concentrating in public relations with a minor in marketing.
Initially, Shawn didn’t know about and was totally uninterested in on-campus activities, referring to them as “a total waste of time.” Shawn became curious about on-campus issues, due to an annoyance with the content of the Anchor and the music on WXIN. Following a chance encounter with the then-Vice President of Harambee, and current Student Community Government President, Josh Laguerre, Shawn became intrigued by the concept of changing things rather than complaining about them.
Joining Student Community Government in April 2007 to represent underrepresented students on campus, Shawn was selected by Josh, the newly elected President of Harambee, to act as the Treasurer of the organization, and was subsequently chosen to do the same in both NAACP and OASPA.
After being hired at the Unity Center in July 2007, Shawn quickly built a reputation for being a leader on campus and in 2008 ran and lost against Chris Kelly for the position of Treasurer of Student Community Government, Inc., only to win against Nikhol Bentley for the position of Secretary SCG, Inc. in 2009.
Now in his senior year, Secretary Andrews fully intends to leave the campus a better place than when he arrived on September 1, 2006.
